The Wheel of Faith - Interactive Multimedia Art

by MY HERO Project from Laguna Beach, California in United States

I hope The Wheel of Faith continues to inspire visitors to the site, as much as it has inspired me.

Article by Nathan Smith

In 2006 MY HERO first published the Wheel of Faith.

It was, at the time, our most popular homepage feature. It started with just two circles and 16 heroes - an inner circle containing the world's major religions and beliefs, and an outer wheel with featured faith heroes, both famous and unknown, who promote peace and love through their beliefs. When you pointed at a face, it would show the name of the hero and a short sentence of what they were best known for.

New faces were added every year around the holidays and so the Wheel continued to grow. The last working version is shown above. The more you explore the wheels, the more faces spin and zoom into view. The final feature contained over 50 heroes celebrating the rich diversity of faith and spirituality across our planet.  It was my intention to show that all humans are connected through the love we have for each other, and that love can be shared through action. I was recognized for my work in 2009 when The Wheel of Faith (which at the time was on the top of the faith category page) snagged a Webby award nomination for best spirituality webpage.

Unfortunately, with Adobe Flash being retired, this work can no longer be used safely on our site. It still exists as flat artwork in our Art Gallery, and you can download the archived SWF if you'd like to play with it using a desktop SWF player. Just download a Flash player, download the file, unzip the archive, and double click. Please note that none of the links work since it is not embedded on our site.
