Michael Phelps was born June 30, 1985, in Baltimore, Maryland. When Phelps was in the sixth grade, he was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), he cannot focus on doing one thing too long, so he has used swimming to relax himself. When he was nine years old, His parents divorced. By the age of 10, he held a national record for his age group in the 100-meter butterfly and began to train at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club under coach Bob Bowman

When Phelps was 15 years old, he participated in the Olympic Games and became the youngest male on the Olympic swim team. He did not win a medal, but he did finish fifth the 200-meter butterfly.

He is a competitive swimmer and he is also the most successful and most decorated Olympian of all time, with a total of 28 medals - 23 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze.

But Phelps also made a lot of mistakes.

In 2009/1/31: A newspaper publishes a picture about he took Marijuana. The picture was taken in 2008 on November sixth when he join a party in a university.

In 2009/2/1: He officially apologizes to everyone because of he took marijuana.

"I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again." Phelps said.

   In 2014/9/30: Because of the drunk driving, he was sentenced to a one year suspended jail sentence, and he was fined 250 US dollars.

  After those things, he changed his mind; he started to do some good like doing public welfare.

Phelps had a swimming race with a white shark in Discovery Channel summer series Shark Week in June, 2017. Phelps swam the 100 meters in 38.1 seconds, while the shark did the same length in 36.1 seconds, beating Phelps by two seconds. Therefore, he lost the race.

In addition to his successful swim career, Phelps has written two books, Beneath the Surface: My Story and No Limits: The Will to Succeed. Phelps also co-founded the nonprofit organization Swim with the Stars, which holds camps for swimmers of all ages.

Although Phelps made lots of mistakes, but he was brave to admit it and reflect on himself, he even did a lot of things to prove himself.

No matter what he does, he is still many people’s hero.
