Margaret Pattison Thom is my hero. She was born in a small suburb called Matata in The Bay of Plenty on the 20th of November 1873. However she was well known as 'Makereti'. Her parents were William Arthur and Ngarotu Te Rihi. Makereti grew up in a village called Te Whakarewarewatanga-o-te-Opetaua-a Wahiao situated in Rotorua. As Makereti grew up she began to learn the history and stories behind her village. From this she became a Tour Guide touring all around Whakarewaewa.

Achievements: She moved to England to pursue to become a writer being educated at Oxford University to live with her beloved husband, Richards Staples-Brown. She wrote a book called 'The Old Time Maori' explaining the different aspects that occurred in a typical life of a Maori. Also she would guide famous people, including royalty.

Why she is a hero to me: She is a hero to me because she is a lady that knows where she is from, where her roots are. She also achieved her greatest pinnacle greater than any mountain. To remember her as 'The Lady of Knowledge'
