Marlene Ahrens

by Charlie from Cedar Grove, New Jersey

Olympic Hero from Chile

Andrew Bernstein once stated, “A hero holds purposes appropriate to man and is, therefore, a thinker.” Great heroes are dreamers and accomplish deeds for the better. Also, they do favors for people they don’t even know. Heroes aren’t normally famous, yet heroes have qualities such as determination, loyalty, and courage to accomplish whatever needs to be accomplished. In the country of Chile, Marlene Ahrens is a great javelin thrower and is considered a hero to many.

Marlene Ahrens was born in the heat of the summer on July 27, 1933 and is still living. In the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia she won the Silver in the javelin throw, also known as the wild sow. Out of all the Olympics, Chile has only won nine medals. Marlene Ahrens has won one of them. Marlene Ahrens is considered a well-known hero in the country of Chile.

When Marlene Ahrens won a Silver medal in the 1956 Olympics, she was the only Chilean woman to place in the Olympics and the rest were men. She once stated, “I competed with as much pride being defending my country that whenever I went to a competition I sent like two or more meters and means more than what I obtained in training.” Until today she is the only Chilean woman to win an Olympic medal. She was a javelin thrower and threw 50.38 meters. Marlene Ahrens is an athletic girl, so after the Olympics in 2000 to 2002 she tried to get a job in Chile and became the vice-president of the Chilean Olympic Committee.

Marlene Ahrens possesses the qualities of being determined, hard working, and a role model. She was determined and hard-working because she wanted to do her best every time. Also, she was hard-working because she worked hard in practice and then she was determined to win in competition. She is a role model because she was the first woman in her country to win a medal in the Olympics. Many people look up to her. These qualities define Marlene Ahrens.

In conclusion, being a hero doesn’t mean you have to be famous. Heroes have done something to influence the lives of others. Marlene Ahrens was a famous javelin thrower and the first ever Chilean woman to win a medal in the Olympics. She is hard-working, determined, and a role model as all heroes should be. She accomplished what needed to be accomplished.
