Rosa Parks was born in Tuskegee, Alabama on February 4, 1913. In her family was her mom, Leona Edwards, and her dad, James McCauley. Rosa Parks had a great grandfather who was a Scottish Irishman. Raymond Parks, her husband, was a barber at his mother's house.
In December, 1943, Parks became active in the Civil Rights Movement. She joined the Montgomery chapter of the NAACP and was elected volunteer secretary to its president, Edgar Nixon.
Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to sit in the back of the bus. Black people boycotted the buses for 381 days. The law requiring segregation on public buses was lifted. So, now everybody could ride the bus and sit anywhere they wanted to.
