My hero was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He is my uncle, Randall L. Jaffe. Most people call him Randy. My uncle is my hero because he does nice things for other people that he doesn't have to do. He went to Vietnam to be a medic so if one of America's soldiers got hurt, he would bring the soldier to a helicopter and the helicopter would be brought right to a hospital. Today he is a nurse and helps people. It makes Randy feel good to help.

Randy loves animals. He wanted to be a veterinarian. He started working at a veterinary hospital when he was 13 or 14 years old. He was a kennel boy. He kept the dog patient's cages clean and took them out for walks. He helped the doctors when they were doing surgery and he really liked being that involved with helping animals. He has eight pets. The eight pets are two dogs, two cats, two chickens, a fish, and a turtle. Taking these animals into his home and helping them, taking care of them, and just adopting them is nice to the animals. He rescued one of his dogs when someone left it at the airport and just abandoned it there because they couldn't take it. He saved her life.

In 1967, Randy joined the army and volunteered to be a medic. But when he got there he was needed for a different area of medicine called preventive medicine. This medicine would prevent the soldiers from getting sick. Soldiers could get sick by drinking dirty water, getting bitten by a mosquito, or a flea carried by all of the rats they had there. The act of helping the soldiers was very kind.

Randy came back to the USA after two years and went to school to be a nurse. He remembered how good it had felt to help people in the army. He thought he might like nursing and after his first day of class in a real hospital, he knew this was his pick for his career. Randy likes nursing so much and still enjoys nursing now.

He loves to learn about history and science. He loves to play chess even though he is not very good at it. He said he practices by playing in his car when he has to sleep in it at the hospital. He loves school but he had trouble with his work. He went to Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, to be a vet but the math was too hard. This shows that you can become a hero even though you don't start out as one.
