Robert Feltham

by Ryan from Innisfil, Canada

You're not building a piano.

Robert Feltham is my grandfather. I call him Poppy. He was born on October 7th in Glovertown NFLD. His parents are Reginald and Emma. His brothers and sisters are Pearl, Margret, Reg, Joyce and Rick. When he was young he liked to play hockey, go fishing, swimming and hunting.

His influence was Winston Churchill. The reason why he was an influence was because Churchill wanted to help Britain win World War II. He became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on May 10, 1940. He became one of the great leaders of World War II. This was influential because he was trying to help his country throughout the war and that is why Robert became a peacekeeper and trained people in the army to help his country.

My Poppy had challenges. When he was 17 he worked at lumber camps in NFLD as a cook and dishwasher. It was hard because he was young and he had to work 7 days a week from 5 A.M. in the morning until 8 or 9 P.M at night. He sawed, split and lit the wood in the saw filer’s shack, bunkhouses and the cookhouse. He served breakfast, cleaned up, and peeled potatoes for 50 men for supper. He sawed and split wood for a few days supply, carried lunch out in a box to the men out in the bush, and replenished the water supply in the bunkhouses and cookhouse by bucket from the well. He also cooked supper, set the tables and cleaned up after dinner. By working there, he learned to set higher goals to reach. He didn’t want to go back.

The second challenge was when he had a job reinforcing steel. This was a challenge to him because of the slip form (it told him when to get stuff done), which was virtually non-stop to keep everything on schedule. Finishing this job gave him the satisfaction of helping to finish the tallest free standing building.

The last big challenge he had was peacekeeping in Egypt. The effect of this challenge was seeing all the poverty there.

It feels to me that the peacekeeping in Egypt was the most important thing he did. I think this because that is what you want to do to prevent bloodshed between countries, and not to spill innocent blood.

My Grandfather Robert is my hero, because he demonstrates leadership and courage, and he is supportive. Throughout his life, he has helped many people and he has accomplished many things. I love my grandfather very much!
