Ruby Bridges was born on September 8, 1954 in Tylertown, Mississippi. During this time there were schools for white people and schools for African-Americans. Both whites and African-Americans could not go to school together. Ruby lived very close to a school for white children so some brave grown-ups went to court. The judge said the schools should be integrated and include all people.

That is exactly what happened. In first grade she went to school with white children. She walked to school with guards to protect her because many people were upset about this. She was the only student in her class because many parents took their kids out of school. Her best friend was her teacher Mrs. Henry. When Ruby entered second grade things changed. Both white and African-American students all learned in the same classrooms. Ruby helped change everyone’s ways. Now it is normal for white and African-American people to go to any school. Ruby is still living, she is 55 years-old.
