Paul Brown

by Mason from Westerville

Paul Brown was born on September 7, 1908 in Norwalk, Ohio. His mother and father were Ida Brown and Lester Brown .He had no brothers or sisters. He is called "the father of modern offense".

He went to school at Washington High School in Massillon, Ohio. In 1925 he graduated from high school. He was the quarterback for his high school team his junior and senior years.

In 1930 he graduated from Miami University with a BA in education. He later earned an MA from Ohio State University, also in education.

His team from OSU gave him a nickname for being a great coach. They called him "Precious Paul".

Paul Brown was married to Katy Kester. He was married in 1929 which was the year before he graduated from college. They had two children that they named Mark and Pete.

Paul Brown first coached high school football for eight years. He coached at the high school in Massillon, Ohio during the Great Depression. Then he coached college football at OSU from 1941 to 1945. WWII was happening while he was coaching at OSU. Eighteen of his players left school during WWII. In the last two years of WWII he coached the Navy football team while a lieutenant in the Navy.

Later, he coached pro teams in Cleveland and then in Cincinnati. Paul Brown's teams almost always won because of his coaching methods. In his high school coaching years, they won 80 times, lost 8 times, and tied 2 times. In his college coaching years, they won 18 times, lost 8 times and tied once. He didn't win later in his career as much as he did earlier, most likely because other coaches started using his coaching methods.

His pro team in Cleveland won the championship ten times in a row! The team was named after him when it started. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Finally he got a stadium named after him.

Paul Brown was a hero because he made modern football what it is today and was a big role model to other coaches and players. He was hero because other coaches wanted to be like him and learn his techniques so they could also win as much as he did. He died July 3rd, 1991.

Here are some fun facts about Paul Brown. He was the first to hire all-year assistant coaches to help, he scouted opponents though game films, he devised the first face guards for helmets, he was the first coach to call plays for the quarterback.
