Freedom

Cardinal Desire Mercier

by JimmyMack from Cedar Grove

Once said by Winston Churchill, “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few!” Heroes help people no matter what the circumstances. A hero can be brave, a role model, and hard working. Cardinal Mercer is considered a hero to the people of Belgium for standing up and protesting the German occupation during WWI.

Cardinal Mercier was born in Belgium in 1851 and died in 1926. In the years from 1914 to 1924, he helped Belgium protest the occupation of the Germans in WWI. Before the war Mercier was a priest who always wanted freedom. In 1915 Mercier almost got executed, but they didn’t kill him because he was a high priest.

Instead of killing Mercier they put him under house arrest. Mercier made speeches about a free Belgium. When Mercier made his speeches he did not care about the risks and almost got executed for his courageous acts. One thing he fought for was the well-being of all people.

Cardinal Mercier is considered a hero because of his selfless acts against the German occupiers in WW1. Cardinal was a fearless man. Mercier was a leader to most of Belgium for standing up for their country. People of Belgium admired him for not giving up his goal to free Belgium. Mercier was an honest man because he kept all of his promises for helping Belgium. Finally, Mercier was brave because even after he was almost executed and put under house arrest, he still fought for freedom.

In conclusion, heroes fight for freedom no matter what the circumstances. A hero can be brave a role model and hard working. Cardinal Mercier fought by making speeches about freedom. Cardinal fought the German occupiers in WWI. Cardinal Mercier is my hero because he did not care about the risks. He fought what he believed in and succeeded.
