"The Broken Little Angel"

CHILD HERO:
MATTIE STEPANEK

by Bonnie May from Morrison, CO

Mattie

God loaned to us a little angel the best that he could lend,
Who wasn’t quite like the others, but was the best he had to send.
He was one of God’s favorites, very different than the rest,
Who touched our hearts with poetry and made our lives more blest.

His broken little body made our hearts fill with tears,
But he never asked for pity the whole time he was here.
There wasn’t a better angel who would have touched our very soul,
For Mattie gave us heartsongs, and his little body paid the toll.

God knew what he was doing when he sent Mattie from above.
He knew he’d spread his message and teach us how to love.
He touched us in so many ways and gave all that he could give.
I for one will never forget him as long as I shall live.

When his job on earth was finished, God called him home that day,
And said to him, “Well done Mattie, now you can romp and play.”
This broken little angel was only here a little while,
But he truly made a difference and made our hearts all smile.

We will miss you Mattie, and miss the heartsongs that you gave,
You were truly humble and surely you were brave.
We now picture you in heaven laughing and running free.
Sharing all your heartsongs there and its how it should be.

Now the little angel isn't broken anymore, looking down from above,
Leaving behind his messages and still sending us his love.
We won’t forget you Mattie for all that you have done,
We’ll treasure all your heartsongs and hope you’re having fun.
