Have you ever thought of being an astronaut, or a scientist, or even a doctor? My hero, Mae Jemison, has accomplished her goals and has inspired me to accomplish mine.

Mae was born on October 17, 1956 in the city of Decatur, Alabama. She was born to Charlie and Dorothy Jemison along with three older siblings. When she was in kindergarten she told her teacher that she wanted to be a scientist, and her teacher’s response was, “Don’t you mean a nurse?” Very few African Americans were scientist. So that was why it was such a big deal to become the first African American woman to be an astronaut.

Mae didn’t listen to her teacher’s remark because she knew not to let other people’s imaginations and thoughts stop her from following her dreams.

Today she is still my hero because she is still accomplishing goals. She has her own foundation called, “The Jemison Group.” This foundation is to improve ways of technology and science to improve our quality of life. She is passing on her determination and motivation to others in her foundation.

My dream is to become a world famous chef and a fashion designer and I want to combine the careers somehow. Now that I’ve heard Mae’s story I believe that my dream will come true.
