Mircea Eliade

by Blos from Dej, Romania

My hero is Mircea Eliade. I admire Mircea Eliade because he is one of the greatest Romanian writers. He has not given up his passion even if he has had serious health problems since childhood. His great passion was writing. Mircea Eliade is a model for many young people fighting for their ideals, even if this requires many sacrifices to be done. This writer has sacrificed his health for fulfilling his dream of becoming a great writer. Even if he had severe problems with eyes, he continued to do what he liked. Mircea Eliade's life is as impressive as his works.

Mircea Eliade was born in Bucharest, in March 13th 1907. Although his father was concerned about his health, Eliade persisted in reading with great passion. His first work, "Enemy of the silk worm", was published in 1921, then followed by "How I found the philosopher stone'', published in the “Popular Science of Bucharest” newspaper, at 14 years old; this work was awarded by the leadership of the newspaper.

There are many reasons why I admire Mircea Eliade, but I think the main reason is because he worked extremely well from an early age to become one of the best writers. After a difficult puberty, mostly spent in a solitary study, he was unanimously recognized as the "chief of his generation”. Since he was 14 years old, he began to write articles on entomology, which proved a surprising imagination and creativity. Soon after, he wrote his first novel.

I was very impressed by Mircea Eliade's power to continue his creative work, in spite of hie illness and age. Even if Mircea Eliade, the man, felt overwhelmed by his illness, the genius Mircea Eliade fought continually to become better known and famous.

In 1957 Mircea Eliade settled in Chicago, as a Professor of Comparative History of Religions at the "Loyola" University. His reputation increased every year and with every new book published. He became member of many famous state institutions and he received many PH honoris causa.

Department of History of Religions at the University of Chicago bears his name, as proof of his vast contributions to the literature in this specialized field. Department take forward by his assistant, John Peter Culianu, a Romanian scientist with a international stature. In the last years of life, despite serious health problems, he continued to remain engaged with the same single, unlimited curiosity and enthusiasm. Author of over 1,500 books, essays and specialized articles Mircea Eliade has enjoyed tremendous attention in the research world, with over 500 dedicated works on business and deferential to creative personality. Mircea Eliade's life was extinguished in Chicago on 22 April 1986. He loved his country and held her in his heart all his life.

Mircea Eliade was proud that he was Romanian, and I am proud that there was literature in Romanian and enriched it with his masterpieces.
