Levi Coffin is my hero because he was caring, stood up for others, and even helped change the world. Levi Coffin was the president of the underground during the 1850s. He helped slaves get to Canada and be free.

Levi Coffin was born on October 28th 1798. In 1821, Levi wanted to start a school for slaves, but slave owners wouldn't let the slaves attend. In 1826, he moved to Fountain City, Indiana (then called Newport) with his wife Catherine. In 1847 he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and opened a store which sold goods made by freed slaves. Levi Coffin also visited Britain and Paris to raise funds for stopping slavery. Levi and his wife hid slaves in their house, while they were on their way to freedom. In the end, Levi raised 100,000 dollars for the Western Freedman's Aid society. Levi helped around 3,000 slaves. Levi Coffin died on the 16th of September, 1877.

Levi Coffin is my hero because he was caring. Even though the slaves were black Levi didn't care. He thought that judging people by their skin colour was wrong and he said it is against what the bible says. He risked his life to help others escape to freedom. Almost every day, he would help another slave escape to freedom.

Levi Coffin stood up for others. In the days of slavery, Levi Coffin would tell slave hunters why they shouldn't whip people because they're black. He would stand up for slaves because if they stood up for themselves, they would be punished.

Levi Coffin had courage. No matter what threats came to Levi for helping slaves, he would constantly put his life in danger to help those who needed him. But he would never be violent to those who hurt him. I think that is amazing.
