Ludwig Van Beethoven

by Lea from Prestcott, Canada

My hero is: Beethoven because he did incredible music even if he was deaf. Beethoven had a lot of perseverance because when he went deaf he still did music. He was also brave for doing big music and still didn’t give up. He cared a lot about music and tried his best.

He was born in December 16, 1770. He lived in Germany. Beethoven’s father and grandfather worked for the electors of Cologne. He was born during the time Europe was changing. It was the time where people where discovering a new life. Where people were beginning to see as equals, even men and women. They were going out and trying new things. Many musicians, artists and writers began to come up with new ideas to begin a new era. It became an era of the Romantics. Beethoven did his part of changes in Europe. He didn’t sit around, doing nothing while the life was changing.

Beethoven showed lots of interest in music as a young age. His father encouraged him to practice piano and violin. Beethoven’s dad hoped that he would be as sensational as the Musician Mozart. Beethoven started music lessons by the age of 8. His teacher was a musician, named C.G. Neefe. When Beethoven was 11 he was Neefe's assistant as the court’s organist. Beethoven’s childhood wasn’t as good as everyone thought, especially when his father started to drink.

Beethoven wrote to his friend that he was losing his hearing in 1801. Then his losing became even worse. After, he became deaf. When he became deaf he continued to do music. (That’s why he’s my hero.) When Beethoven’s deafness came he was having much difficulty. He faced many difficult medical problems. Even if he knew his deaf was coming and becoming worse. He didn’t stop. Once he came deaf, Beethoven didn’t give up music and continued his career.

I’ll tell you about Beethoven’s death. On March 26, 1827 around 5:45 pm there was a storm going on. They say soon his room was filled with thunder and lightning. At a sudden peal of thunder, his eyes opened wide and he lifted his right fist until a few seconds later he fell on his pillow. And he had an expression on his face that no one knows what it meant. I heard that twenty thousand people came to his funeral. Beethoven once said “Speak louder, shout, for I’m deaf… With joy I hasten towards death... if it comes before I shall have had an opportunity to show all my artistic capacities it will still come too early for me despite my ... Come when thou will I shall meet thee bravely. ..."
