Jackie Robinson

All I ask is that you respect me as a human being.”

“I'm not concerned with you liking or disliking me…
All I ask is that you respect me as a human being.”

On January, 31,1919 Jackie Robinson was born in Cairo, GA. Six months after Jackie was born his father told Maille, Jackie's mother, that he was going to Texas to visit his brother and he never came back. Jackie was the youngest out of his 3 brothers and his 1 sister. Mallie saved up enough money to place a down payment on a small house on a corner house.

When Jackie started school the teachers saw how worn out his clothes were so they all brought in clothes for him. Jackie started working at the age 9. He had 4 jobs. His jobs were collecting newspapers and selling them to the junkman. When he 10, he sold hot dogs at the nearby Rose Bowl Stadium. He caddied at one of the private golf courses and then in his last job he would wake up at 4am on Sunday mornings and deliver newspapers.

In ninth and tenth grade he was in a “gang.” But even though he was in a gang he was forced to go to church every Sunday morning. He went to George Washington high and his sports reputation grew. Once he left high school he was playing sports in college. In 1947 he got into the Dodgers. He was there until 1956. Then 12 years later he died on Oct. 24, 1972, of diabetes.
