John Parker

John Parker was born in Norfolk, Virginia in 1827. John Parker had a white father who was rich and a mother who was a slave just like John. Some interesting facts about John Parker’s early life are that John was sold to a doctor at age eight. One cool fact about John Parker is that he was a slave for eighteen years then he bought his freedom in 1845. Another fact about John Parker is that there is a school and a house in Ripley, Ohio named after him.

John Parker did not go to high school but before John helped free slaves he was a businessman. John Parker was married to Miranda Boulden on May 12, 1848. He had six children. Their names were Hale Giddings, Cassius Clay, Horatio, Brianca, Portia and Hortense. John Parker was a slave before he became famous. When John Parker was a slave he was known as a troublemaker.

This is how John Parker became famous. John was a slave in Norfolk, Virginia. Then John bought his freedom and lived in Ripley, Ohio. John went back to free about 1000 slaves and that is why John Parker is famous. Some major accomplishments John Parker has was that he invented the follower screw for tobacco presses and the Parker pulverizer.

In 1845, when John Parker bought his freedom, these things happened in the USA: There was a fire that burned 1000 buildings in Pittsburgh, Florida became the 27th state and Texas became the 28th state. Some fun facts about John Parker’s middle years are that when he was a slave he learned to read and write unlike other slaves. Another fact is that there was a poster that said “Reward of $1000 for John Parker Dead of Alive!”

John Parker dies on January 30, 1900. John Parker is a hero because he helped free about 1000 slaves when he knew if he got caught he would go back to being a slave or get killed.
