I believe that a hero should be good role model, an honest person, a smart student, courageous, thoughtful and responsible. Jeremy Logan Glick was all of those things. Jeremy was born on September 3rd 1970. He went to Saddle River Day School, which is special to me because that is the same school I go to school. Jeremy also met his wife Lyz there in Honors Biology. They were prom king and queen in 1988.

During high school Jeremy was a judo wrestler. After graduating high school he went to Rochester University. In Rochester he learned to love poetry, especially "On Success" By Ralph Waldo Emerson:

"To laugh often as much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best of others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition."

Jeremy could recite this poem by heart.

On August 1st he married his long time girl friend from high school Lyzbeth Cooke Makely. Together they had a baby girl on June 18th 2001 named Emerson, Emmy for short. Emmy was one of Jeremy's heroes. She was named after Jeremy's favorite poet Ralph Waldo Emerson.

One reason why Jeremy is my hero is because he was kind. When Jeremy was young he went to a local swim club in his town with his brothers and sisters. He met a girl there named Virginia. Virginia was 19 and very slow. Not many people were kind to Virginia but Jeremy was. The friendship between Jeremy and Virginia had something special between it.

Another reason Jeremy is my hero is because he was responsible. One night he used his dad's car without permission to go to a play in NYC for English class with a girl named Gillian. Unlike Jeremy, Gillian wasn't wearing a seat belt. A car hit the side of his car and Jeremy threw Gillian into the back seat. Moments later Gillian was taken to the hospital. Jeremy saved her life!

A couple months after Emerson was born and a few days after Jeremy's birthday, Jeremy was assigned to go on a business trip for his job on September 11th. Jeremy and all the other passengers didn't know about the hijackers. The hijackers attacked 4 planes trying to crash them. They shot the pilots and they drove the plane. One of the planes was Jeremy's plane. He and a few other men agreed to go up to the front where the hijackers were steering the plane and try to stop them. Unfortunately their plan didn't go the way they wanted it to. The plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Little Emerson didn't know what happened to her father because she was 3 months old. Everyone was in shock. Later after Jeremy's death his older sister started a website called jeremysheros.com. The point is to get school aged kids to participate in sports programs because Jeremy loved sports. Go to jeremysheros.com for more information. Jeremy Logan Glick will always be an American hero to me.
