Ivan Karpenko-Kary was born in Elysavetgrad, now Kirovograd. He was a famous dramatist and actor. His real surname is Tobilevych. He studied at a small school and graduated only three classes. He worked very much and changed many professions. He was pysarchuk and secretary in the Police Board. But he liked the theatre and took part in amateur performances. He lost his wife and favorite daughter in 1881 and 1882. But he could find the strength live on.

His first literary work was published only in 1883. He was born in 1845. He became a famous dramatist. He joined to theatre troupe and became famous actor.

People who knew him very well, wrote that he was very strong, but never took pride in it and protected others. He chose another way, he mocked his enemies.
