Heroes

by Stephanie from Oro Medonte

The air above the city is clean and there is a gentle breeze. I can hear someone coming up the stairs and think it is another person that wants to enjoy the fresh air. All of a sudden I feel a round barrel on my back. “Get down.” A voice says. I start to obey when I feel something go by me and a clattering on the ground. When I turn around all I see is a red cape and I know I am safe.

My chest hurts and every time I take a breath my throat burns. I can hear voices and footsteps but every time I try to call out I can’t hear myself. I feel something getting lifted off my chest and hands underneath me and then blackness. I hear my name being called. I slowly open my eyes and see white all around me.

There are many different types of heroes for different reasons. Each person has a different hero or person they look up to. All heroes are different but they all follow the same character traits. These traits are sacrifice, determination, loyalty, courage, tirelessness, dedication, selflessness, conviction, focus, gallantry, perseverance, fortitude, bravery and humbleness. Not all heroes have all these traits but they have most.

Superheros are the most well known type of hero with superpowers like x-ray vision, the ability to fly, walk through walls, shoot webs, awesome fighting powers and such. They have a strong moral code and are willing to risk themselves for no personal gain. They have a secret identity like Peter Parker, Bruce Wayne, Kent Clark and Tony Stark. Some have independent wealth like Wayne Industries and Stark Industries that support them. All superheroes have a distinctive costume and sometimes a theme song, with a number of enemies that are always out to get them and take over the world. Superheroes have a supporting cast made up of co-workers and people they are in a relationship with that are a part of how they got their powers. Most superheroes have a headquarters that one of their co-workers runs and a few people know their secret.

Ordinary heroes are anyone doing something you consider heroic. It could be firefighters who rush into burning buildings to see if everyone is safe and out risking themselves, or nurses who work in the emergency room that make sure everyone is taken care of, or the single mother of 3 that works 2 jobs to support her family and still has time to show her children that she loves them. All these seem very heroic and hard to do, but not everyone considers this heroic.

Past heroes are people who lived in the past and have changed the future. These heroes follow 5 main traits and these are fearlessness, application, instruction, tirelessness and humbleness. Some examples are Helen Keller who was born dumb but learned to communicate or Lance Armstrong who had cancer, beat it and won the Tour De France, or William Graham Bell for inventing the telephone or Thomas Edison for inventing the light bulb. These are all people that without them our lives would not be the same.

Heroes come in many forms. The definition of hero changes for different people. Everyone can be a hero.
