Bethany Hamilton

by Michelle from Shelter Bay, Ontario, Canada

My hero is Bethany Hamilton she was born in Kauai, Hawaii on February 8,1990. Bethany loves to hang out with her friends. She also loves to surf on her surfboard. At the age of 13, she was one of the world's best surfers. On Halloween in 2003, Bethany was surfing with her friends waiting for a wave, when a tiger shark swam under her surfboard and attacked her. The shark ripped off her left arm.

Two years after the shark attack, Bethany wrote an autobiography called “Soul Surfer." She also spends time talking to children about physical challenges. She encourages them to never give up. Bethany Hamilton always stays positive. She is not scared to go and share her story. She also has not given up on surfing. She demonstrated heroism in 2005 when surfing with one arm, she won the National Championship award.

Bethany Hamilton shows strength when she follows her dreams and never gives up. She also shows determination by getting back on her surfboard after her accident and practicing to be a winner. I think she is a hero because she shows other kids that physical challenges don’t have to stop you from following your dreams. Bethany Hamilton shows positive thinking by moving forward with her life.

With World Vision, Bethany’s parents have raised thousands of dollars for children with physical challenges. Bethany Hamilton is really proud of making a change in the world.
