And fill the cup with red wine The firmaments let us shatter And come with a new design Hafez (1324 -1391 A.D.), the best Persian poet, lived in the beautiful city of Shiraz (known as the city of roses and nightingales). In his childhood he had memorized the Holy Koran by listening to his father reading it, therefore he gained the title of Hafez which means the memorizer of the Holy Koran. It is said that Hafez had done this in fourteen different ways. He loved poems and had memorized many of the poems of famous poets such as Saadi, Attar, Rumi and Nizami. Hafez is the most popular poet in Iran. He served as court poet to several rulers of Shiraz. His poem book called Divan can be found in almost every Iranian home. It’s a collection of sonnets called Ghazal. Some of his poems are about God and some of them are about love.
John Payne, who has translated the Diwan Hafez, regards Hafez as one of the three greatest poets of the world, the other two being Dante and Shakespeare.
His tomb, a sacred place of the Iranian people and people from other countries, is located in Shiraz.
