SPORTS HERO:
DARRELL GREEN

by Nate from Arizona

Children look up to professional athletes because of what they can do on the field. But most pro athletes aren’t good role models for what they do off the field. For a professional to be a hero he needs to use the money and fame given to him to help others in need instead of using his money and fame to help himself. A hero is a person who stands for what’s right. Darrell Green is that kind of person. He set the bar as one of the greatest cornerbacks in all of NFL history. And he has started an after-school program, The Darrell Green Youth and Life Foundation, for underprivileged children.

Darrell Green spent his entire twenty-year career with the Washington Redskins. He is nicknamed the Ageless Wonder because he played at a high level well into his forties. He amazed everyone with his endurance and perseverance. He set the record as the oldest cornerback ever to play pro football. He also set the record for most games played as a Redskin. The way that Darrell Green excelled in the NFL shows his commitment to excellence. He is the kind of athlete kids should look up to because he excelled at his sport, and he is the kind of man that any parent would want their child to become.

The Darrell Green Youth and Life Foundation was started to “help children develop into leaders who positively influence their families and communities.” Darrell Green shows he stands for molding the future generation into a generation of strong leaders by taking underprivileged kids and putting them in after-school programs that focus on academics, friendship, and values. He believes that children deserve the attention of adults who care about them and their future.

Darrell Green is committed to helping people. His Christianity is a big reason why he started his foundation. He doesn’t have to help people, he could just live his life in a big mansion and not care about anyone. It is a refreshing example of what professional athletes should be like. That is why Darrell Green is my hero.
