My Grandpa

by Ismirahma from Bandung

I, an innocent girl, call him ompung (read : opung). A wise tall 88 years old ‘Batak’ man. I will never forget how he became my hero. He taught me many things, although he didn't realize it. You must be confused, are you? How did my grandpa teach me anything without realizing it? Yes, because what he taught me was not like algebra, sciences, or physics, but about life and how to face it.

He didn't speak much, but he taught me things those I had not learned before. From his habits, I learned how to be disciplined. From his attention, he showed me how to love others. From his history, I know how important education is. Sometimes he opened my eyes to make me realize that something that was impossible becomes possible.

He was a perfect grandpa for me. He's very generous and kind to everyone, he never made others sad or hurt them. But he's an explicit man who had principles. He was also smart because he liked reading very much. I really admired him. He is always my role model. Although he has passed away, I feel that he still teaches me from my heart. I really love him as he loved his grandchildren very much.
