My Great-Grandfather

by Mariam from Novosibirsk, Russia

Let me introduce myself. My name is Mariam and I’d like to tell you about my hero. It is my great-grandfather. His name is Mihail. He is not with us today. He died in 1986.

I saw on the photo that he is gray- haired and he has got a long beard, but in his youth he was a tall, hazel eyed, black – haired beautiful young man. He was 45, when the WORLD WAR THE SECOND started.

He was born in Saint Petersburg in 1886, in a captain family. After revolution his family moved to Krasnoyarsk. At the age at 17 he started his career as a sailor. After 30 years since that time he was the captain of the ship, which was called « Krasnoyarsky rabochiy ». He was married with an Armenian woman, her name was Wartyi. They had 3 children: Alexander, Grisha and Asthik. Alexander and Grisha served with Mihail at the time of the WORLD WAR THE SECOND on the same ship. Unfortunately, they died but my grandfather survived.

He is a hero for many reasons. Firstly, he was 100 years when he died. Secondly, he was the veteran of the WORLD WAR THE SECOND. Thirdly, he could find work in peaceful time: he became the captain of the ship.
