Gheorghe Popescu

by Valerio Maftei from Galati, Romania

Gheorghe Popescu, also known as Gică Popescu was a Romanian football player who is now an entrepreneur.

He participated with the Romanian national football team to the final three tournaments of World Championship and two of the European football Championship (1996 and 2000). Throughout his career he played at FC Universitatea Craiova, Eindhoven, Tottenham Hotspur, FC Barcelona, Lecce, Galatasaray (with which he won the UEFA Cup in 2000).

He was the captain of the famous team FC Barcelona, which won the Champions League.

After the withdrawal from football, he started his own business and opened a football school (named after him- Gică Popescu) in Craiova. This school is the most modern one in Romania with football pitches, saunas, fitness rooms, swimming pool, and bedrooms for the 200 children who train every day to become famous footballers.

What I most appreciate about him is that he, besides being a very good player, also thought of doing something useful especially for the talented children, and that with modesty he involved himself in lots of other projects of the kind helping others fulfill their dreams either in football or in some other sports.
