Fred Myers

by Leslie from Sultana

"All thoughtful persons recognize that cruelty is an evil that should be eradicated from our society, not merely for the sake of animals, but for our own good." - Fred Myers

I love animals, but I don’t think I could start a whole organization to save them. Until this man inspired me to at least help. I’m talking about the founder of the Humane Society, Fred Myers.

Born 1904 in Kansas City, Missouri, Fred Myers was going to start great things. He was a passionate man because what he thought he could do he did it. This is one of his quotes: “The animal that will die six seconds from now, the animal dying, the animals that will die this year - these animals can’t wait." This quote shows more than just words, it shows how much he actually cared and how he wanted to help.

My hero inspires me because he didn’t make the Humane Society just to save animals, but to help people see that cruelty is bad towards animals and humans. Fred Myers didn’t just come up with the idea to help animals, like every hero he was inspired. But, what inspired him? Well, something that inspired him was the AHA, American Humanist Association. He joined AHA and was with them for quite awhile. Then, he left them to go do his own thing.

Fred Myers was a man with many accomplishments. One of the things he accomplished was he became a journalist. He also thought that animal experimentation should be regulated, so he accomplished that. My hero has influenced me to help the animals and not be cruel towards them. He also influenced me to tell other people to help. This is the quote that inspired me; he said, “Hundreds of local societies could lift their eyes from local problems to a great national cruelty."

“Every Humane Society…should be actively concerned about treatment accorded to such a vast number of animals.” A man who had more ideas, died of a heart attack in 1963 at age 59. My hero was great man and this proves why.
