Fin Donnelly

My hero is Fin Donnelly, a Canadian hero. The reason I chose him is I think that it is important that we keep our waters clean and that we help the environment stay clean and earth friendly.

Fin Donnelly got inspired at school when he learned about the issues at the University of Victoria. He learned what we were doing to the planet and the district and he wanted to help to make a difference by drawing people's attention to the issues. Plus, when he was very young, he used his spare time to pick up litter where there was a messy spot to clean up.

Fin Donnelly is trying to solve pollution and global warming. He is also trying to keep our waters clean from pollution because if everyone pollutes rivers, lakes and streams there would be nowhere to swim, no clean water and the animals need clean water to drink. Fin swam up the Fraser River. He did it to bring awareness to people that they are polluting the rivers. He wanted to make a difference so that there will be less pollution in the Fraser River and all of the rivers, lakes and streams in our area and around our provinces.

The first time Fin swam up the Fraser River, he could actually see pollution in the river. He even saw garbage at the bottom of the Fraser River. Prince George was the first big city in his swim. In Hope (the next town), Fin Donnelly could see a difference in the river. In Chilliwack he could see a really big difference. In the Lower Mainland and in Coquitlam he saw that there was more pollution and that the risk was higher of the salmon dying. That means that there would be less fish for us to eat or cook with. When I got a chance to meet Fin and interview him, he told me that the adventure was scary and painful. I would never be able to do something like that...never in a thousand years!!

Fin Donnelly has a lot of courage, bravery and has inspired me to try to keep our planet unpolluted. He helps remind people that we should be keeping our lakes, rivers and streams clean from pollution. He has started to clean up the Fraser River and Noons Creek. His hope for the future is that all of our waters, lakes and streams will be unpolluted. We can help Fin do this by using re-usable water bottles instead of those plastic ones. Now at my basketball games I use a re-usable bottle and I challenge everyone to do the same and to not throw their garbage into the rivers!
