Florence Nightingale

What do you think the qualities of a hero are? To me a hero is someone who cares about other people, not just themselves. Not all heroes have the same qualities. But the reason I chose my hero, Florence Nightingale, is because Florence has saved many lives by caring and talking to all her patients.

When Florence was a child, she had a very wealthy family. Her dad had a good job as a banker. Her mom stayed home and threw big parties. As Florence started growing up she needed a job. Her parents asked her what she wanted to be. She would always say a nurse. Every time she said that, her parents would suggest that she host parties. But she would say no. She wanted to be a nurse. Finally she got her dream.

Helping in the hospitals

Florence Nightingale had always wanted to be a nurse. When she got to the hospital to start working, Florence was surprised how the other nurses were treating the hospital and the people. The hospital was dirty and the patients were not treated with respect. Florence wanted to put a stop to this so every day she would take her time to clean the patients’ rooms. One day she overheard the nurses telling the doctors that the patients weren’t there to get healthy, they were there to die. After Florence heard that, she had to do something. The next day when she went into one of the patients’ rooms to give her lunch, she started talking like she did to all patients. That personal contact made the patients feel much better.

Florence was sent to be a nurse in the Crimean war in 1854. As Florence walked through the doors of the hospital, she couldn’t believe her eyes. The hospitals were so dusty that Florence kept on sneezing. As she kept walking she saw a lot of sick and hurt people that were in the war. Finally Florence saw a nurse helping someone. As she pointed, the nurse told Florence to help a patient. Florence set her bags down and she started walking to the man. Florence sat in a chair next to the man and started talking to him as she did to all of the men. This made them have hope.

I believe that Florence will always be my hero because she has the qualities of a hero such as being benevolent and not having to get praise. Even though Florence probably isn’t everyone’s hero she will always be mine. Florence always wants to make things better and make people better. That is why she is my hero.
