Ernest McCreight

by Gaelan from Millbrook

My hero is my great-grandfather Ernest McCreight (1906 - 1968). My great-grandfather fought in World War II in the Royal Canadian Army. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Engineers or "sappers". "Sappers" were a group of engineers who were on the front lines. Their major role was to make the army move. With other troops at the front line under fire, they opened up routes for the tanks and infantry to continue their assault. They provided battle maps, repaired and built roads, airfields and bridges; cleared mines and road blocks; filled in craters, etc.

He is a hero to me because he chose to fight in World War II so that he could help to keep ours and other countries free.
