Duane Dean McMullen

by Fuong-Ye from Indianapolis

Do you ever think about thanking the people who fought in war? The people who put their lives on the line for our country’s freedom? Well, I do. I thank my Dad Dean McMullen, who fought in the 1990 Desert Storm war in Iraq. All the time, even if it’s just for little things he does for me.

Duane Dean McMullen was born and was raised in Indanapolis, Indiana. He grew up in a house just across the street from Stephen Decatur Elementary school, with his brother (Kenny Ray), sister (Levia), and mother (Helen). He was named Duane but along the way people started to called him Doozer because of a nickname his Uncle, Ray(Bell), called him when he was younger. He joined the Army at age 23 and was ready to train for the long journey ahead.

His training in the army was difficult, and most of it is classified. But here’s the little bit I do know. They had to eat quickly in case they were called out to battle. He and the others slept with their head rested on their hand and arm to keep bugs from crawling into their ears. Yuck! Waking up early was also a part of being there. Always training to get better at what they did in the field. My father was a member of recon and special forces team.

My dad, Dean McMullen is a family hero. He is a hero because he put his life on the line to protect our country and our freedom. He said it was his job to go to war. Dad was one of those brave people who believed that it was his duty and he was willing to serve his country.

My dad, Dean McMullen, is my hero. He has a good heart and head on his shoulders. Although sometimes he does silly things, that brings a smile to my face. Plus, it makes me proud to call him my Dad and my hero.
