My Mom Christien

by Ashley from Morinville, Canada

My hero is my mom. Her name is Christien. She is my hero because she helps me with my homework when I need it. She keeps everything on track in our daily lives. Brittany and I like to ride horses and so on our lessons she gets us there on time and helps us tack our horses. My twin sister and I figure skate in the winter time. For our lessons she gets us there early so we have time to get ready and not be late. My twin sister Sydney also takes violin and gymnastics. On Wednesday after school we all eat supper then Sydney goes to violin. Saturdays we are up early in the mornings and Mom takes Sydney to gym.

One night I asked her if she would like me if I had no arms or legs and she said "Yes, I wouldn't just like you I'd love you.”

My mom also has a business in our family garage. It is called Specialty Designs LTD. She helps children, teens and even grown-ups with Cerebral Palsy or ones that have a limb or two that don’t quite work. She can make a hand cycle for people whose legs can’t bend like one another, also a bike with a balance set. A balance set is not training wheels - they may look like it but it just helps that person to balance while riding a bike. With a balance set that person is still riding a two wheeler bike. Mom has gone a long way with this business. She has talked to strangers from Morinville, St. Albert and even Edmonton. She deals with people who are sometimes a little greedy and some nice ones too. But all those people that mom helps are just like you and me and not one bit different.

My mom has two heroes. Her first one is her own mom, my gramma Jerry. When my mom was a kid their family didn’t have much money but her mom always paid the bills and kept food on the table. They were a happy family. After her car accident she had to start all over again learning how to walk, feed herself and everything. Now she is strong and healthy. She is such a fighter.

Mom’s second hero is my sister Brittany. She was born with C.P. and almost died when she was born. Her whole life is a struggle. Everything that she has accomplished she had to fight for tooth and nail. She has never complained. She doesn’t whine. She always has a smile on her face, even when she just had surgery. Being near her makes everyone smile and realize that life is just too precious to live in a foul mood or in self pity.

I wish one day I will grow up to be just like Mom as she has helped so many people. I love you Mom!
