Someone once said, “Nurture your mind with great thoughts; to believe in the heroic makes heroes.” Heroes don’t have to be well known around the world. They can live in your neighborhood or be known personally to you, yet they have accomplished a great deed. A hero is someone who is determined, honest, confident, and who has perseverance. A well known action star, Jackie Chan, has done a great deed for the children of Hurricane Katrina and is considered a hero to them.

In his childhood, Jackie Chan suffered terrible poverty. He joined the Peking Opera School to be trained in music, acrobatics, and martial arts. Jackie would train about 18 hours each day! When his parents left him, he was adopted by his master of the Peking Opera School. He was part of two school troupes called The Seven Little Fortunes and Painted Faces and performed in public performances. Bruce Lee was a well known stunt man. When he died, Jackie Chan became the new stunt man. He no longer followed in his shadow.
Jackie really never thought about doing charity work before. Then, one of his friends said that he should help others by donating or volunteering his time. He became convinced to help people in need. Jackie joined the United States Children’s Fund to help children that have HIV or AIDS. He also donated money to them. When he was in the middle of making the movie The Tuxedo, he cancelled it because of September 11, 2001. He felt so bad that he cancelled every plan he had that day.
In conclusion, a hero doesn’t have to be well-known around the world. A hero could be someone that you look up to or someone that inspires you to be like them. A hero also has many great qualities that fit them. The hero that I look up to is Jackie Chan. He may not be a hero to you, but he is to me and the children of Hurricane Katrina.
