Cheer Chen

Her third album

My hero is a female singer. She has released five albums from 1998 to 2009. My favorite album is her third album “groupies,” which is different from the others filled with a dark and lonely atmosphere. Instead, “groupies” is filled with joy and warmth and echoes the rosy lyrics in it. However, it still implies philosophy and psychology just like her other compositions. She always sings like a gentle whisper and that’s why I can't quit her. So, who’s she? She is Cheer Chen!

My favorite song

With a soft and comfort voice, Cheer Chen sang my favorite song “Pussy”. She wrote it in 2007 because of love, fear and her deceased cat. Cheer is a singer in Taiwan. She always sings her own songs that she composes by herself and plays the guitar at the same time. Maybe some people don’t like her style, but she doesn’t care about that. Because she sings for herself, the people she loves and the world which brings her up and trains her, and she can perform her songs in a unique style. Though some people criticize that she is too hypocritical, but I believe no one could censure the hard-working girl that has tried so hard to realize her dream.

The concert

Without the ostentatious advertisements, Cheer sold her EP at the roadside in the Kenting coast when she was not famous at the first time. The fiery sun and the few customers didn’t make her give up. Then she joined many competitions and performances to increase her experiences and exposures. The most famous place in where Cheer Chen often performed is the “Witch House”

The Witch House is a restaurant that provides the stage for underground bands and performers who are fond of music. There are some small concerts every day. Many guests come here for the excellent music and the delicious food. The Witch House is the place that avant-garde musicians gathered in. By the way, there is an interesting game in it. They listed a paper to explain how the women suffered from the brassieres. If the woman dares to take off her bra and drape it over the chair, she can have a glass of mulberry yoghurt for free.

Cheer’s Chinese name is “Chen Chi Chen”. She graduated from Philosophy of Taiwan National Chengchi University. I think that is why her songs are so mystical. So her songs are classified as non-mainstream music. But her fans are not less than other mainstream music. For example, her tickets of the concert were always sold out fast, and even faster than the famous band “MayDay” in Taiwan.

When Cheer was a little kid, her mother persisted in cultivating her, even though they were so poor. The little Cheer knew her mom’s good intentions and she didn’t want to spend too much money, so she used secondhand instruments and eat cheap bread for lunch. Now, she is a singer, and who she presents the most thankful is her mom.

Cheer is in a spirit of filial piety. And it’s what we need to learn from her. Though we can’t be a nice singer like her, we still can learn to be a person who never gives up. Just like her English name “Cheer.”
