 Como niño, él amó a Maria Poppins y a El Dr. Dolittle, y él puede recordar corer para llegar adelante de todos en su familia y poder amontonarse en una silla preferida y leer Viajes del Dr. Doolittle. Él también leyó Nancy Drew , de los muchachos Hardy, Tom Swift , y chorrocientos de libros cómicos.
La primera vez que (él recuerda) pensar que él quisiera ser un escritor fue durante el sexto grado cuando su maestra, la Señora Crandall, le dio a la clase un periodo de tiempo prolongado para escribir un cuento largo. Él amó hacerlo, y comenzó a trabajar seriamente en hacerse escritor cuando él tenia diecisiete años de edad.
Eventualmente él llegó a ser un maestro de primaria, y trabajó con alumnos del segundo y del cuarto grado. (Nota: una de las maestras en nuestra escuela, la Sra. Lamson, tuvo al Sr. Coville como alumno quando ella era joven. ¡Sr. Coville todavía la reconoció después de todos estos años!
