In this paper we plan to tell you many things about who Abraham Lincoln was, and what he did for us to consider him a hero. These are the questions that helped with this research. What did Abraham Lincoln do while he was President? What did Abraham Lincoln do to be classified as a hero? What are heroes exactly? Some people think that heroes just save lives, but that isn’t necessarily true. Heroes can be inspirational, too. A person can be a hero of others. We think that a hero is someone who is honest and believes in fairness. Our hero is Abraham Lincoln who was both honest and fair.

First, here are some general facts about Abraham Lincoln. Abe Lincoln was born in a little log cabin in Harden County, Kentucky. His parents were Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. He was born on a Sunday morning, February 12th 1809 to be exact. Now through Abe’s life he moved several times, and had several jobs. For example when Abe was 8 he moved to Illinois. Also when Abe stopped growing he was 6 feet 3 inches tall, and weighed about 180 pounds. He was tall and thin.

Now to the questions, what did Abraham Lincoln do while he was President? Lincoln raised an army and decided to fight to save the Union from falling apart, because Lincoln didn’t want slavery. In fact Lincoln declared slavery illegal. Despite big pressures, loss of life, battlefield setbacks, generals who weren't ready to fight, assassination threats, and etc., he continued his goal against slavery.

To be a hero Lincoln stuck with this pro-Union policy for the four long years of the Civil War. On Jan. 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect. This was Lincoln's declaration of freedom for all slaves in the areas of the Confederacy not under Union control. Because of Lincoln, minorities now have the same rights as whites and all races. This is why he is a hero in our country and to the entire world. The fight for the end to slavery was long and bloody, but the outcome was good. The Union soldiers fought long and hard but finally prevailed. This was an act of bravery and an act of courage, but most of all, an act of patience. For this, Abraham will be remembered for generations to come. And this is why Abraham Lincoln is a hero.

Finally, Abraham Lincoln is remembered for his vital role as the leader in preserving the Union during the Civil War and beginning the process that led to the end of slavery in the United States. He is also remembered for his character, his speeches and letters, and as a man of humble origins whose determination and perseverance led him to the nation's highest office.
