Rudolph Giuliani

by Jake Grieco from Montvale

A hero to me has to be willing to help other people. A hero must be honest and show kindness to others. A hero should be brave and not give up when he/she loses. A hero should be able to over come obstacles.

Rudy Giuliani was born May 28, 1944 into the third generation of working class Italian immigrants. He had a hard time as a child because his family was never around because they were criminals. His father had connections with the mob and was arrested several times. His cousin was killed by police because he was connected to the mob too. He grew up around killing and violence and to get away from that kind of life was very hard for him because the rest of his family had not done anything else.

Instead of becoming a criminal like his family he decided to become an important person. So attended Bishop Loughin memorial high school in Manhattan. He then went to Manhattan College. Mr. Giuliani then decided to go into politics so he went to New York University law school. His first political job was attorney in the southern district New York. Then he became the executive U.S attorney. After working for six years as an attorney he decided he wanted to run for Mayor. So in 1989 he ran for mayor of New York City but was defeated. It was the closest run for mayor ever. Finally in 1993 he was elected mayor in a city that Republicans were out numbered 5 to 1. He was the first Republican New York mayor in two decades. Rudolph Giuliani was now the 107th mayor of New York City. Then he was elected again in 1997.

While he was the mayor, crime and murder rates were at their lowest. Crime rates fell 57% and murder rates fell 70%. Many more people were back to work because of him. He also reformed the city's finances. To make the city even better he told the police to take an aggressive stance, even against litterers, jaywalkers, and reckless cab drivers. He was never afraid to say what was on his mind. Many say Giuliani was tough but he got the job done. New York City was the safest big city for 5 consecutive years. Giuliani hated the schools and thought they were dysfunctional and just plain terrible. So he created a system that would allow some of the kids in the worst schools to go to private ones but it was unsuccessful. Since he could not make kids go to private school; he improved the schools they were in.

As you can see Rudy Giuliani matches my description of a hero. When he helped the people lost in the smoke that was showing kindness. Being not afraid to say what he thought is showing honesty. Helping during September 11 when he was in danger is being brave. Not joining the mob when his family was in is being able to over come obstacles. Image how hard it must have been for a boy whose family is part of the mob to grow up and try to stop that. That is like a family who sells liquor and their kid grows up and tries to raise the drinking age. When he lost in 1989 but came back to win in 1993 that in not giving up. Rudy Giuliani has proven himself to be a tremendous leader and that is why I have chosen him as my hero.
