Nawal el Moutawakel

by Chaimaa from Chichaoua, Morocco

Nawal after her Olympic victory.
Nawal after her Olympic victory.

Nawal Moutawakil is a Moroccan hurdler. She was born on April 15th, 1962. In 1984 she won a gold medal and she was the first Arab African Muslim female to become an Olympic champion. In 2006 she became one of the eight bearers of the Olympic flag in Italy.

Nawal was from a simple family but she did what no Arab or Moroccan woman had ever done. That is why she is a hero for me and she should be for all women all over the world. I've given a small paragraph about her because there isn't as much information about her as there should be.
