Milton S. Hershey

by Nader Sabbah from Beirut, Lebanon

Brown, thick, and creamy. What would chocolate be without "The Chocolate King?" Milton S. Hershey dedicated his life to create the best chocolate ever. Milton was born on September 13, 1857 on a farm near Derry Church, Pennsylvania; he was the only surviving child of Fannie and Henry Hershey. Due to his frequent family moves his education was interrupted, so he attended school though the fourth grade. At the age of 15 Milton followed a four-year apprenticeship with a Lancaster candy maker, which is where his love for candy all started. "The Chocolate King" is my hero because life was hard on him, it shut many doors on him but he never gave up but instead worked twice as hard.

Milton later established his first candy making business in Philadelphia but unfortunately it failed. Milton later tried to establish two other businesses in Chicago and New York but unfortunately they also failed. After these events Milton did not give up, but indeed learned from his mistakes and worked much harder. So he returned to Lancaster, PA in the year 1883 and established a business known as the Lancaster Caramel Company. That business was a big success; it established him as a candy maker and set the stage for future accomplishments. Milton was later enthralled with chocolate-making machinery and bought the equipment for his Lancaster plant and began producing chocolate. After a couple of years, Milton sold his Lancaster Caramel Company for $1 million and returned to Derry Church to build what is now the largest chocolate factory. But other than building a chocolate factory he recreated a town; a bank was built,a department store, a park and a church - but most importantly The Hershey Industrial School which schooled over 1,000 children from low-income homes.

I believe that my hero had a great impact on the world. For instance, he made the best chocolate ever!! But more importantly he set hopes and dreams for many people out in the real world. Milton Hershey never gave up; he worked hard and achieved his goal. He became successful and understood the importance of money and how it could be used to help the less fortunate. He donated money for many of the cultural and recreational facilities found in Hershey. These included an amusement park, a zoo, public gardens, and a sports arena. "The "Chocolate King did more than just produce wonderful candy: he cared about people and gave back to his community." ~David. Milton S. Hershey could teach us to never give up and that good things will occur if you wait but great things will occur if you work hard, in our modern world.

I know many people who struggle through similar issues, but unlike Milton S. Hershey they gave up and never tried again. I look up to Milton because I share many of the same interests; the love for chocolate and caramel, and the sensitivity toward less-fortunate people. I chose Milton because his accomplishments inspired me; he worked hard, never gave up and eventually became very successful.

"The Chocolate King" is my hero because life was hard on him, it shut many doors on him but he never gave up but instead worked twice as hard. He established many shops that failed until he established shops that succeeded which led to many happy faces. I learned much from this hero but most importantly I learned that you can learn from failure and that if you do good things, great things will come to pass.
