Laura Secord

by Erin from London, Ontario

"I shall commence at the battle of Queenston.”

Laura Secord is my hero because she was such an inspiration to me. She was born September 13, 1775 in Massachusetts. She went to school at St. Martins in Thunder Bay. She moved to Canada when she was 18 years old. She got married to a man named James Secord. She had one son and six daughters. Laura Secord’s favourite thing to do is to read. Her Challenges were living in a time of war.

Why is she my hero? In 1813, Laura Secord overheard plans that the Americans were going to attack the British so they could take over Fort Niagara. She wanted to warn the British soldiers, so she walked 32 km to be able to tell them of the secret attack. Fitzgibbon and his troops were able to defend Canada along with the Natives. Part of Canada was saved because of her efforts. She also saved the soldiers’ lives. She was an inspiration to the soldiers in the revolution.

Laura Secord chocolates were founded in 1913 in her honor. She also has a statue at the Valiants Memorial in Ottawa. That is why Laura Secord is my hero, she was determined, loyal and also brave.
