CELEBRATING RON KOVIC ON THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE

9/02/13 – SANTA MONICA, CA – September 21 is the United Nations International Day of Peace. To celebrate, The MY HERO Project is pleased to honor activist, author, and artist Ron Kovic with a multi-media Mandela inspired by his heroic journey. Tom Cruise, Oliver Stone, and Daniel Ellsberg have shared their love for this great man in recorded videos with MY HERO as part of the tribute. Journalist Robert Scheer, filmmaker Frank Cavestani, Loretta Smith and members of the pioneering video collective TVTV are coming from around the nation to be a part of this special evening at the Herb Alpert Educational Village in Santa Monica. The program will include short films, songs, art and speakers. Ron will be there to accept his award as a Messenger for Peace from MY HERO.

Kovic, a longtime supporter of The MY HERO Project, has been an outspoken champion for peace since the 1960s. As a Marine Corps sergeant, he was paralyzed from the mid-chest down during combat in Vietnam. Kovic then turned his attention toward peace, leading marches and becoming a prominent spokesperson for the anti-war movement. He has spent the past 42 years speaking out for the rights of veterans and victims of war.

His experience is beautifully told in his autobiography, "Born On The Fourth Of July," The book was published in 1976 and became a best seller. Ron co-wrote the screenplay adaptation with director Oliver Stone. The film, "Born on the Fourth of July," starring Tom Cruise, became an Academy Award nominated and Golden Globe-winning film.

Ron has been a great supporter of The MY HERO Project. Each year, Kovic sponsors a Peace Prize at The MY HERO International Short Film Festival. The award goes to the short film that best represents the theme of peace and offers a $1000 cash prize to support the efforts of artists and peace activists. Kovic's story is chronicled on the MY HERO website (http://myhero.com/ronkovic).
