Harriet Tubman

by Claire from Austin

'Never lost a passenger'

Harriet Tubman was born on March 10, 1913. She worked as a spy during the American civil war. After escaping slavery she made 13 missions to rescue more than 70 slaves using the underground railroad. When she was a child she was hit by a metal weight thrown by one of her masters trying to hit another slave. The injury had caused seizures, headaches, delusions and daydreaming. In 1849, she escaped to Philadelphia and later went back to go rescue her family.

Slowly she brought out relatives one group at a time and eventually dozens of other slaves out of slavery. Large rewards were offered for the capture of the person who was helping slaves escape but nobody knew that it was Harriet Tubman. Later she died on March 10th from pneumonia.
