George Lopez

by Ramon from Sultana

“We have so many people in the camp that it's difficult for everybody to find a porta-potty. With 90,000 people at a game, you can imagine 10,000 standing in line.”

George Lopez may be known as just a comedian, but in real life he’s a hero to me!

George Lopez was born in Mission Hills, California, on April 23, 1961. Life for George Lopez as a child was very miserable and cruel. At birth he was deserted by his father and when he was 10 his mom abandoned George for her boyfriend. She left him all alone in a house and told him, "Stay here I’ll be right back". So he stayed, but she didn’t return. He was thinking to himself, where is she?

He was lucky that he still had his grandparents. Benita Gutierrez, a factory worker, and his step-grandfather Refugio Gutierrez, a construction worker raised him. Just like me, George Lopez lived with his grandparents. The bad part was they kicked him out when he was 19. They demanded that he should get a job.

George Lopez had many obstacles that he had to overcome, like when his grandparents kicked him out, he still got a job and did standup comedy shows in a studio. We can both take giggles and snickers out of most people. Then one day Sandra Bullock, a famous actress, came to him and asked him to star in a show. At first he said no, eventually it sunk in. So, now he has his own television series and he showed me that if you have a goal in life keep on reaching until you reach that goal. Even if you come close to it you’ve still accomplished some of that goal and it's better than not trying.

George Lopez is my hero because he showed that you can do anything if you don’t give up and he showed me if he can do it then anybody can do it.
