Franklin Roosevelt was born in 1882. When he grew older he decided to follow his fifth cousin Theodore Roosevelt in public service through politics. In 1910 he won the senate election for New York. He was later appointed the secretary of the Navy and the nominee for Vice President in 1920. But, sadly in 1921, when Franklin was 39 years old he found out that he had poliomyelitis(Polio). He was unable to use his legs at all. He tried to regain his capability to use his legs by swimming but it did him no good.
In 1928 Roosevelt was elected Governor of New York. Then in November of 1932 he was elected as President of the United States. During Roosevelt's first term he started social security, heavier taxes on the wealthy, new controls over banks and public utilities, and an enormous work relief program for the unemployed to help the nation. In 1936 he was elected once again and would be elected two more times.
Then on December 7, 1941, the empire of Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Roosevelt declared war against Germany and Japan, and the United States was thrown into the second world war. The war raged on for years. Thousands and thousands of men died. The death toll was the largest in U.S history. Also Roosevelt had to deal with The Great Depression. America was falling apart. Many people were unemployed and poor. If they did have jobs, they worked very hard for little pay.
"More than an end to war, we want an end to the beginnings of all wars." Franklin Roosevelt
As the war was about to end Roosevelt's health became very severe. On April 12, 1945, Roosevelt died of a cerebral hemorrhage. He never lived to see the end of the war. The Vice President Harry Truman, then took over the presidency and decided to launch the first atom bomb on Japan, ending the war.
In my opinion, Franklin Roosevelt was the greatest man that ever lived. He got America through World War Two and The Great Depression. Knowing that he would have to deal with the War and Great Depression he still ran for office, four times. He knew America needed help, and he wanted to be the one to help it. He gave America hope. He gave America strength, when America needed it the most. He helped shape this country. When he died, a little bit of America died with him.
"I have seen war. I have seen war on land and see. I have seen blood running from the wounded...I have seen the dead in the mud. I have seen cities destroyed... I have seen children starving. I have seen the agony of mothers and wives. I hate war" Franklin Roosevelt
