WORKING HEROES FROM THE GUESTBOOK

Rika Copeland from Gail, Texas

My Grandmother married when she was 17 and had two children shortly after. All through her life she worked in schools and on farms while managing to raise her sons. She is now a 59-year-old widow who operates her own business. She wakes up at 5:00 each mornning to open her store at 6:00. After working her eight hour shift she still manages to cook a full course meal for her youngest son and her brother. She does this every day of the week. She is also very famous around the small community we live in. This is because she is so caring and generous. She is always the first to offer her services and always the last to ever ask for any. She is by far the most independent woman I know. What amazes me most is how she just keeps going and going after the long hard life she has lived. She has touched many with her sweet sincerity, agility to work, and most of all her advice she gives. This alone is reason enough to be considered a heroine.

Erin Betters from Boulder, Colorado

Michael Moore is the guy that gives us all hope that it's possible to be funny and correct at the same time. Almost every politician, CEO, and media liaison these days sound like they come from the same circle of hell--the boring circle. When companies present record profits, Moore asks why their employees are being rewarded with layoffs. When Nike uses 14-year-old girls in Third World countries as part of the labor force, Moore asks Phil Knight why adults in Flint, MI aren't given the same shot. When politicians win offices because there is no other choice, Ficus plants are nominated by the man to run against them. Moore stands up for the rights of the populace in the face of the rights of profit and the dollar. At a time when the capitalist constitution seems to supercede the constitution of the United States, and a time when "Of the People, By the People, For the People" is little more than a bumper sticker, Michael Moore has the guts to ask who "the people" are and why they're being ignored and quieted every time they stand up and clear their collective throats.

Karen H from Center Valley, Pennsylvania

My hero is my dad. His name is Thomas Micheal Haines. He was born in Lower Bucks Hospital in Bristol, Pennsylvania. He's a hard worker. he's been all over the world. He has 5 kids and their names are Karen, Samantha, Rebecca, Virginia, and Michael. Also my mother's name is Jennifer Haines. His kids are 11, 9, 7, 7, 5 years old. His parents names were Thomas and Dorothy.

How he differs from other heroes because he helps me and tells me to try my best and do things some people won't want to do. How he compares to other heroes: he helps me one I'm sad, he also says to get good grades, and helps me on my homework.

His accomplishments or achievements are that he is a hard worker, funny, and is nice. He's been around the United States. He was in tech school, and went to learn the skill of an electrician.

He influenced me by encouraging me to get good grades and tells me to do things that are good for me even if I don't want to. He is helping me become a young adult.

Andrew Jackson is an American hero because he made many changes that have helped improve our country. Andrew Jackson stood up for the common man and they stood up for him. The common man (such as the farmers, factory workers and craftsmen) could now vote. Andrew Jackson believed that the educated and the nobleman had ruled the government for too long .The common manŐs favorite slogan was, "Let the people rule" which was often said by Andrew Jackson . Andrew Jackson was elected president on March 4, 1829. He was elected for 2 terms. He made changes to the presidency by strengthening it and also made changes to the politics of America. What do you think the country would have been like without him ?

Amanda S. from Oil City, Pennsylvania

My Heroine is my grandmother, Linda S. Craft. She has two children and two grandchildren which she loves very much. She has been working as a custodial worker for many years. She has raised two children and loves her grandchildren very much. I admire this person because she is so honest to everybody. And she is very caring towards her family and many others. She's also very friendly to everybody. Some of her qualities are being friendly like when somebody would do something mean she would forgive them for it, and caring to everybody like if she saw somebody that needed help she would help them, and honest because she never lies to anybody. I think I could be like this person if I am honest to everybody, friendly and caring to my family and others.

Evelyn Wiese from Laguna Beach, CA

My heroes are Ordinary Citizens. From New York to California, Denmark to Zaire, heroes are born every day. They are ordinary citizens with extraordinary courage and determination. Some make headline news while others go through life little known, except by friends and family. My heroes are some of the latter. They are the men and women who risk their lives every day to ensure a safe community for all, they are the doctors who work for the C.D.C.. While movie stars hold elaborate social gatherings and world renowned sports figures negotiate yet higher salaries, these courageous medical workers work on low wages, day and night to prevent a possible epidemic. I salute these heroes for their continuous efforts to protect humanity. They carry the burden of public health dutifully and without complaint. These are the saviors of the world.

Xuan Nguyen from Des Moines, Iowa

My parents were greatest heroes I had had in my life. They have given so many things for me, and no word could describe how grateful I am to my parents. My mom has raised me under a Great Depression in Vietnam. My father left us to take a big risk on his life to find us a better life, going to America. He was a Captain in U.S Air Force, after the war is over he lost everything and has gone to reeducation camp. There my father suffered through severe weather and dangerous of the forest. After we came to America by H.O program, my father has worked very hard to make a best living for our family.
