Hayao Miyazaki (1941-) Many of you will have no clue who Hayao Miyazaki is, but I'll tell you. In the next couple of paragraphs you will learn about how he has impacted the world with his creative ideas, humor and artistic talent by film.

Miyazaki is a Japanese animator who has made movies such as Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Porco Rosso, Spirited Away (Oscar winner), and more recently, Howl's Moving Castle. Born in Tokyo on January 5, 1941, he started animating in 1963 with Studio Toei Douga and was involved with many early anime (Japanese animation) classics. He later moved to Studio Ghibli in Tokyo where he is currently.

To me, Miyazaki is a hero. He spreads creativity and art throughout the world. He makes people smile and laugh, and cry and dream with pictures and characters that are drawn in amazing detail. His stories are so out there it makes you wonder how he could make them up. He can be funny and inspirational at the same time. My favorite movie he has made is Spirited Away. It is about this girl who has to save her parents from being eaten by the spirits who turned them into pigs by working in the bathhouse in the spirit world. Do you see what I mean by "out there?"

Hayao has a style of drawing that I don't think anyone else has. He puts big wrinkled noses on old bad witches or bad guys and makes people's hair stand up on end when they are scared or surprised. The backgrounds are detailed and sometimes look very realistic.

I love Mr. Miyazaki's movies and art. Hayao Miyazaki is my hero.
