Warren G. Harding was born on November 2, 1865. He was born in Blooming Grove, Ohio, near Marion. He was born in a small cottage. Warren Harding was the oldest of eight total siblings. His mother was Phoebe Elizabeth Harding. His father was George Tyron Harding. Some fun facts about Harding are when he was a child he could barely sit still, making it hard to take his picture. Harding’s middle name is Gameliel. When Warren was young, his dad studied at Homeopathic Hospital College.

Harding was married to Florence Kling De Wolfe. Florence’s son, Marshall De Wolfe lived with the Hardings from time to time. Harding’s girlfriend, Nan Britton, had a daughter who Harding never met.

In 1899 to 1902, Harding was a State Senator for Ohio. Then in 1903 to 1904, he was the Lt. Governor of Ohio. Next, in 1904 through 1906, he was a newspaper publisher of the Marion Star. From 1906 to 1915, he traveled around the world. Getting back into politics, he was elected U.S. Senator in 1916.

In 1920, Harding was elected as U.S. President. His vice president was Calvin Coolidge, who eventually succeeded him as President. He ran against Democrat James M. Cox and won by large margin, 60% to 34%.

One of Harding’s accomplishments is becoming President in 1921. Another was signing a peace treaty with Austria and Germany, formally ending World War I. He was also the first President to have a speech broadcast on the radio.

During Harding’s era, World War I had just ended in 1918. Alcohol was made illegal from 1919 to 1932. Unemployment was very high at the time. Women had also just earned the right to vote.

Warren was married to Florence Harding. During his Presidential campaign, he gave speeches from his front porch and thousands traveled to Marion to hear him. Harding was a Baptist.

Warren G. Harding died at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, California, August 2, 1923. No autopsy was performed so the cause of death was unknown. His body was on a train from California to Washington, D.C. He is buried at the Harding Memorial in Marion, Ohio.

An impact on history that Harding had would be helping to bring peace to Germany and Austria. He showed respect to his friends by giving them important jobs in the Government.

Florence Harding, his wife, burned all the documents that she thought would damage Harding’s reputation. His last words were, “That’s good. Go on, read some more,” as she read a review about him in the newspaper. Florence Harding died on November 21, 1924.
