Terry Fox

by Nathan from Bradford, Ontario, Canada

To reach your dreams people have to try

Terrance Stanley Fox is an amazing hero because he ran all over Canada on one real leg to raise money to help stop cancer because when he was in the hospital with cancer he saw lots of other children with cancer too.

Terrance Stanley Fox was born on July 28, 1958 in Winnipeg Manitoba. Terry went to J R. Secondary School and then Simon Fraser University. Unfortunately, Terry did not graduate. Terry had 2 brothers, Fred and Darrell and a sister, Judith. Terry's parents were Rolly and Betty. Terry was in basketball. He was very good even though he was the shortest kid.

Terry Fox had two big obstacles. First he had cancer and then he had to have his leg amputated at age 18. Terry's one big influence was the group of children at the hospital with cancer just like him. I think that made Terry feel bad so he wanted to help all those children. He decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research even though he only had one leg. He worked hard to overcome these obstacles.

Terry Fox tried to run across Canada and his goal was to collect $1 from every person to help stop cancer. He ran until September 1, 1980. He was starting to feel sick again and the doctors discovered that Terry`s cancer had spread to his lungs. Terry had to stop his journey. Terry had successfully raised over 4 million dollars before he died at age 22.

Terry Fox had two great character traits. He had courage and he was also caring. He had courage because he had an artificial leg and was running across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He also was caring because he cared for all the children he met who had cancer.

Terry fox influences me because he followed his dreams of being a hero and he tried very hard to make people aware of the need to raise money for cancer research.

The reasons I picked Terry for my hero are that he followed his dreams and he tried really hard to raise money for cancer research. He lead an interesting and inspiring life.
