My hero is Robert E. Lee. He was born January 19, 1807, in Virginia. Lee was a brave fellow his whole life. He fought battles and he was leader in many of those battles. A hero is a person that other people count on, and look up to. He is also someone who is trustworthy, loyal and fights to be the best he can be. Lee was a commander in the northern and southern armies. His father Colonel Henry Lee and Lee’s mother, Ann Hill Lee, had seven children. Robert E. Lee was the fourth child and the youngest boy out of all the boys. Robert E. Lee’s father, Henry Lee, died in 1818 when Lee was only 11 years old.

Robert E. Lee was 18 when he went to West Point and was 22 when he graduated. Once he graduated, he joined the Corps of Engineers and helped with projects that dealt with construction of military bases and ports. In 1831 he married Mary Ann Randolph Custis. When he fought his first war, the Mexican War, he was promoted to captain. Lee belonged to the U.S. Army and they asked him to be the leader of the Union forces but he said no and joined up with the South and became the leader of the Confederate forces.

Robert E. Lee was commander of many battles and wars. He was the leader in the battle of Chancellorsville where he lost one of his best men, Stonewall Jackson. Lee split his forces into three groups to defeat Union troops and the Union had more people than each Southern group. It was still a success except there were many casualties. There were more casualties for the Southern army than there were for the Union. This shows that you can count on him to keep fighting after he lost many men and one of his best leaders, Stonewall Jackson.

When Lee was asked to be leader of the Union, he said no, even though he had trained and fought with the U.S. Army for most of his career. This shows that he is loyal to his home state of Virginia. He joined the South and later on he became the leader of the Southern forces. He also fought in many of the Southern battles and wars. He led many of those soldiers to victory.

Robert E. Lee is a hero to me because he had fought for his territory. He never backed down to anyone; he fought to the end. He kept fighting even after serious casualties. Even though many casualties happened, he had to put them in the past. If he didn’t, he probably would not be able to lead his forces of men to a successful battle. I believe that he is someone that is loyal and someone you can count on to keep fighting after those tragedies that happened in his life. I have learned from this experience that you have to fight for your nation and your territory. If you want to be respected you cannot back down to anyone. Always fight to the end and never quit. That is what I believed Robert E. Lee always thought. He always fought to the end and never quit.
