Who can be called a hero? This question is very important because there are many people on the earth who make something good every day. In my opinion a hero is ready to risk his or her life for others. A hero does something really great. He or she must be brave, courageous, daring, even desperate. Sometimes such a person forgets about himself to help other people. There are a lot of well-known remarkable people who can be called heroes. I think there are a lot of doctors among them.

My Hero is Nikolai Ivanovich Pirogov. He was born in November 1810 in Moscow and died in November 1881. He was a famous Russian scientist, doctor, surgeon, public figure. I think he is a Russian national hero. He did a lot for the development of surgery. When he completed his studies in 1828, he wanted to be a surgeon. He wrote his famous anatomical atlas of people's body in 1851-1854. He worked as a surgeon in the Crimean War in Simferopol in 1854. In the Caucasus Pirogov found the new operation methods which were better than the old ones. He cured a lot of soldiers and did a lot of operations. When he was 67 years old he went to Bulgaria during the Russian-Turkish war and worked there, risking his life.

In Russia, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Estonia many hospitals, medical universities, streets are named in honor of Nikolai Ivanovich Pirogov.

I think that Pirogov can be called a real hero because he helped very many people risking his life and his health. I also want to be clever, good, brave, courageous. I want to help people. Pirogov is a very good example for me.
